Changes in the 2021 IBC

• Puzzle rooms (escape rooms) are now defined as special amusement areas and must meet Section 411 and special means of egress requirements.
• For counting control areas, each portion of a building separated by fire walls is treated as a separate building.
• Group E classrooms of 20,000 cubic feet or less must meet the classroom acoustics provisions of ICC A117.1.
• Rules for metal composite materials (MCM) on exterior walls of Types I to IV construction were simplified, and the sprinkler allowances were deleted.
• Intermodal shipping containers used as buildings now have specific provisions.
• Group S-2 open parking garages need automatic sprinklers where any fire area exceeds 48,000 square feet.
• Aggregate-surfaced roofs need parapets of a minimum height to prevent blow-off.
• Mixed occupancy buildings with a public assembly occupant load over 2,500 move to Risk Category III.
• Snow and secondary rain load provisions were updated to match ASCE 7.
